Asphalt pavement
exhibiting “alligatored” type cracking patterns usually suggest a failed
subgrade which is remedied best by removal of the existing asphalt,
recompaction of the subgrade, and installation of new asphalt material. This condition is usually caused by the
subgrade below the asphalt becoming over-saturated as water penetrates the
pavement through cracks, potholes, adjacent landscape areas, etc. The subgrade becomes spongy and soft and
gives way as heavy traffic travels over the asphalt surface. The asphalt is less flexible than the
over-saturated subgrade and cracks as a result.
There are less costly, but
more temporary methods of repair involving reinforcement fabrics combined with
asphalt overlays.
Shrinkage cracks can be
filled with cold or hot rubberized crack fill material.
Also, low areas in the
surface which keep water from draining and asphalt pavement eroded from
nuisance water can be corrected through asphalt patching.
